Did you know?

Your own personal foot mechanics can be a big contributor to Plantar Fasciitis. Flat feet, or a high foot arch and or your walking gait can all affect the way weight is distributed when you're standing, walking or running and put added stress on the Plantar Fascia.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

The pain caused by Plantar Fasciitis is often most intense after rest (for example, when first stepping out of bed), and generally lessens as you walk and start to use your feet more.

Plantar Fasciitis is a foot condition that can affect a range of different people. Whilst it can be hereditary, a number of other factors can cause Plantar Fasciitis. It is commonly associated with obesity, people who spend a long time on their feet, and also with athletes, especially runners, who put extra pressure on their feet. Runners with Plantar Fasciitis will often feel more pain because of the repetitive striking of the heel on the floor which can in turn inflame the Plantar Fascia ligament. Poor fitting footwear can also be a contributing factor.

What causes Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis is caused by the inflammation of a thick band of tissue (the Plantar Fascia) that runs across the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel bone to your toes. This band of tissue supports the arch of the foot which helps to absorb shock and impact when walking or running. When strained, it becomes swollen and inflamed, causing pain. It is generally caused by pressure being applied to your feet, whether that is through aerobic exercise like running, the excess pressure exerted by obesity, or age (Plantar Fasciitis is most common between the ages of 40 and 60).

Sometimes the cause of Plantar Fasciitis remains unclear. Usually though it is due to repeated stretching which inflames the fascia. Your Plantar Fascia is shaped like a bowstring, supporting your foot arch for shock absorption. If tension on this bowstring becomes excessive, the fascia can tear.

What can I do to relieve or prevent pain from Plantar Fasciitis?

The most important thing to do is to listen to your body and to adapt your behaviours accordingly. If you are getting pains from excessive pressure on the plantar fascia then you should consider stopping for a while until you have addressed the issue. You can use RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression Elevation) to help in the meantime while you seek medical advice.

FootBalance UK sell a range of custom insoles, comfortable footwear and medical-grade compression products, including OS1st Plantar Fasciitis socks, which you can browse here

One of the main contributory factors to Plantar Fasciitis outside of health issues linked to age or obesity are your footwear. Shoes that do not support your feet properly will contribute to foot pain caused by standing for long periods, running, dancing or other strenuous activities.
